What is labiaplasty?
Whether as a result of age, childbirth or congenital development, the labia may grow larger, and protrude from the vagina. Women may also experience discomfort and reduced pleasure with intercourse and loss of confidence during intimacy. A labiaplasty improves the look and function of a woman’s external genitals. A short surgical procedure, it can be instrumental in reducing the size of the inner labial lips, the protruding outer labial lips, or both. In addition to making intimacy easier and more enjoyable, a labiaplasty eases the discomfort of walking, running, or wearing tight clothes, and can even help with personal hygiene issues as well. Labiaplasty procedures are among the most-effective at renewing patients’ overall happiness and self-esteem! Labiaplasty is also incredibly effective at correcting a number of physical afflictions caused by the formation of the skin, multiple pregnancies and vaginal deliveries, aging, and menopause. These can include such issues as:
- Redundancy of tissue in the perineum
- Hypertrophy or excess tissue of the labia minora
- Atrophy of the labia majora
- Mons pubis bulkiness
- Prominence of the clitoral hood
- And more…
What is the surgery like?
Before any surgical procedures take place, you will undergo a thorough physical examination and a full medical history will be taken to ensure the highest levels of safety and exact tailoring to your unique needs. This history will include information on exposure to hormones or hormonally-mediated medications, menarche, puberty, pregnancies, types of delivery, and menopause. The pre-op physical examination will also include inspection and systematic analysis of the labia majora, labia minora, clitoral hood, perineum, and the mons pubis. After a history and physical examinations are complete, pre-operative photographs are taken to properly catalog your anatomical concerns. Following the photographs, Dr. Zienowicz opts for pre-operative marking, as anesthesia may contort the tissues and alter the proposed incisions. From these informational marking sessions, we will have enough data to allow the labiaplasty to take place. It can be done under local anesthesia or IV sedation, and typically takes 1 hour to complete. The surgery begins with a very small incision along the labia minora, just inside of the skin folds. The excess skin is trimmed to achieve the desired shape and size. Labiaplasty surgery reduces the labia minora (inner labia) and/or the labia majora (outer labia), and the fold of skin surrounding the vulva. After the surgery is complete, dissolvable stitches are placed for proper healing. You will also be given dressings and soothing salves immediately to prevent swelling and discomfort. If you did opt for sedation, you will be allowed to recover in one of our specially-designed recovery rooms. With either local anesthesia or sedation, you will be able to go home the same day, and the results are immediate and permanent.
What are the scars like?
Scars from our labiaplasty procedures are both minimal (as the female genitals heal very quickly) and are designed to be hidden after surgery. Even under close examination they are only slightly prevalent. There may also be initial swelling as your wounds heal. But that will fade over a very brief amount of time. Labiaplasty does not negatively-affect sexual sensations or your ability to have an orgasm.
What is the recovery like?
Recovery times after labiaplasty vary depending on the patient, but there are general recovery timeline guides you can expect to follow:
- Swelling: 2 Weeks (Peak) to 6 Months (Total Dissipation)
- Walking & running errands: Day After Surgery
- Returning to work: 2 to 3 Days
- Strenuous activity & exercise: 4 Weeks
- Sexual intercourse & use of tampons: 4 to 6 Weeks
- Showers: Day After Surgery
- Tub soaks & pools: 2 to 4 Weeks
Pelvic elevation is recommended to reduce swelling. You will receive a maxi pad with a small amount of ointment after surgery to decrease bleeding and discomfort, and you will be able to use a personalized water bottle to cleanse yourself after going to the bathroom. Icing is also recommended to decrease inflammation, as is bacitracin to prevent infection.
